Duane Park, first public space acquired by New Yor

Duane Park, first public space acquired by New York City to be a park, was purchased in 1795. The city bought the land from Trinity Church (which still is one of the largest landholders in lower Manhattan) for the sum of $5. Once the streets were laid out in 1797, the triangle that resulted from the mismatching street grids was deemed only suitable for a park.

Over the year it has been redesigned & changed many times, including once by Calvert Vaux 1887, again in 1940 with a Beaux-Arts design, in 1954 when the western end was removed, and most recently, in 2000, when it was again redone to reference Vaux’s 1887 design.

This weekend the streets surrounding Duane Park will host Taste of Tribeca. Tribeca Trust will have books for sale at the event as well (weather permitting).

This detail used to adorn 61 Franklin Street, until it was removed a few years before the whole building itself, along with 360 Broadway was torn down around 2019, and the lot has sat in limbo ever since. And yes, at some point Franklin Street must have been renumbered, as this clearly shows number 67, which currently is on the other side of Broadway.

Looking better than it has in years, 287 Broadway

Looking better than it has in years, 287 Broadway (on the south west corner of Reade Street). A 1872 Italianate and French Second Empire landmark, it had been behind scaffolding since 2007, after it started to listing due to excavation next door. Currently, the ground floor houses a TD bank branch.
