Duane Park, first public space acquired by New Yor Duane Park, first public space acquired by New York City to be a park, was purchased in 1795. The city bought the land from Trinity Church (which still is one of the largest landholders in lower Manhattan) for the sum of $5. Once the streets were laid out in 1797, the triangle that resulted from the mismatching street grids was deemed only suitable for a park.

Over the year it has been redesigned & changed many times, including once by Calvert Vaux 1887, again in 1940 with a Beaux-Arts design, in 1954 when the western end was removed, and most recently, in 2000, when it was again redone to reference Vaux’s 1887 design.

This weekend the streets surrounding Duane Park will host Taste of Tribeca. Tribeca Trust will have books for sale at the event as well (weather permitting).
