Finn Square:
What might become of the square – and Tribeca – if some part of this area was closed to traffic?
Download here pdf of existing conditions of the square: Finn Sq. existing conditions
Finn Square has assets, like this new Parisian-inspired subway entrance
The garden is another asset
Before the subway, it was a lively spot
This hotel used to be at the corner
The Rothschild building was replaced by the Con-Ed substation
The square was created during the subway construction
More scarring occured during the construction of the El train up West Broadway
Note the glimpse of the Rotchchild building in the far right
The scarring left a lot of underused roadway
and the Con-Ed wall is not much to look at
Fresh Direct uses the roadway, but few others do.
More views of excess roadway
There are trees fronting the Con-Ed Sub-station
More roadway/garden views
Square diner has a great tree and sidewalk tables
local artists offered improvements – here Bill Barrett
In 1980 Richard Serra provided an interesting contrast to the Con-Ed substation
Even without closing the roadway, this is possible, such as found on Sullivan Street
And another
and yet another
one more, to make the point that we can use our imagination
Such as here, in this photoshopped image
