Oliver Allen died last year and is greatly missed in the neighborhood. He was our neighborhood historian – as a retired journalist he wrote a popular monthly column about Tribeca history for the Tribeca Trib. Those columns were compiled into two widely read books about Tribeca. He also photographed all the buildings in Tribeca for the original survey of our historic assets for the Landmarks Preservation Commission. And later, he served as Recording Secretary for the Friends of Duane Park where for many years he took it as his civic duty to water the garden – as needed – until the sprinkler system was installed.

There will be a an event honoring Oliver, described below, to which all are invited.

Memorial Celebration for Oliver Allen

Duane Park, Hudson Street at Duane Street, NYC

Reception to follow at Hal Bromm Gallery, 90 West Broadway at Chambers Street.

In case of rain, the event will be held in the gallery.

To honor Oliver, Tribeca Trust is raising funds ($3,000) to put in three tree guards, a new tree, and a memorial plaque on one of the three trees that front Morgan’s Market along Hudson Street. Oliver liked to walk there daily to get his newspapers at Morgan’s Market and he always lamented the lack of care for those trees. So we will care for them, in honor of his service to Tribeca.  Contributions to the tree fund for Oliver Allen are welcome, payable via check or paypal to Tribeca Trust here.
